Has your microcar suddenly stopped starting? There are several common issues that could cause this – ranging from a simple battery problem to more serious engine faults. In this troubleshooting guide, we cover the most frequent causes and what you can check yourself before contacting a workshop.
1. Battery is Dead or Faulty
This is the most frequent reason. Check that the battery has sufficient charge. A weak battery may produce clicking sounds but not have enough power to start the engine. Ensure the battery cables are securely connected.
2. Faulty Starter Relay or Ignition Switch
If turning the key does nothing, the issue could be the starter relay or ignition switch. Listen for clicks from the engine bay – if you hear nothing, the relay might have failed.
3. Loose Connection or Ground Issue
Inspect cables, grounding points, and fuses. Corroded cables or loose connections can interrupt power to the starter or control system.
4. Defective Starter Motor
If you hear a loud click but the engine does not turn over, the starter motor may be faulty. Also check that it isn’t mechanically stuck.
5. Fuel Pump Not Working
No fuel means no combustion. Listen for a humming sound from the fuel pump when turning on the ignition. If it is silent, the pump or its control system may be malfunctioning.
6. Electrical Issues or Stored Error Codes
If the engine management system prevents starting, it could be due to a stored fault code. Use a diagnostic tool to read the codes or consult a workshop. We offer diagnostic tools for Lombardini DCI engines.
