Common Issues with Ligier JS50 & JS60
The Ligier JS50 and JS60 microcars are well-regarded for their solid build and reliable engine options, making them a long-standing favorite on the Nordic market. While the engines generally perform very well and the cars are known for their durability, there are a few components that tend to wear out or require replacement over time—especially given the Nordic climate and the often spirited driving style of younger drivers.
Brake Components: Pads, Calipers & Discs
The braking system is one of the most critical aspects of vehicle safety and is also among the most commonly serviced areas on Ligier microcars in colder climates. With the JS50 and JS60, we often notice:
- Brake calipers, pads, and discs require frequent replacement due to heavy wear, particularly from exposure to Nordic weather conditions. When replacing the front brake discs, it is also common to change the wheel bearings, which is worth considering when planning maintenance.
This type of wear can also be linked to heavy braking—something that tends to occur with a younger and more energetic driving style.
CV Joint and Steering Rack Boots
The protective boots for the CV joints and steering rack are another commonly replaced part. Over time, they may lose elasticity or crack. Replacing them in time helps ensure that the drivetrain and steering system remain in good condition.
Drive Belts (CVT System)
The drive belts, which are central to the CVT transmission, are also prone to wear. As they deteriorate, performance may decrease and in the worst case the vehicle could come to a complete stop if the belts fail. Regular inspection and timely replacement are key to preventing unexpected drivetrain problems.
Shock Absorbers
Shock absorbers play an essential role in the suspension system by reducing road impact. With constant use, particularly on uneven roads and in varying temperatures, these parts can wear out. Replacing worn shock absorbers restores ride comfort and ensures the vehicle handles road conditions effectively.
Door Handles and Other Fragile Body Parts
Exterior details such as door handles and other body components are more vulnerable to cracking, discoloration, or mechanical damage caused by both weather exposure and regular use. While these are not critical to performance, they can affect both the appearance and the usability of the car.
