Does the gearbox in your moped car no longer seem to function properly? Are you finding it difficult to shift between forward and reverse? If the sensors are malfunctioning, it might be time to replace the gear shift, an essential component of your moped car. In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps for properly performing this replacement.
What is a Gear Shift on a Moped Car?
The gear shift on a moped car connects the automatic transmission to the gearbox and allows you to switch between neutral, forward, and reverse. Two cables transmit information from the gear shift inside the vehicle to the gearbox. The gear shift needs to be replaced when the neutral, forward, or reverse sensors no longer function correctly.
Necessary Equipment
To replace the gear shift on your moped car, you will need:
- A car lift to raise the vehicle.
- A jack to support the exhaust pipe.
- A screwdriver.
- A new gear shift that is compatible with your car model.
Time Required:This operation should take approximately one hour to complete. You can also follow our video guide for a more detailed walkthrough.
Step-by-Step Guide to Replacing the Gear Shift
1. Remove the Gear Shift Knob: Start by removing the gear shift knob inside the car, which is secured with a screw.
2. Raise the Moped Car: Use a car lift or jack to lift your moped car off the ground.
3. Remove the Exhaust Pipe Suspension: Detach the suspension from the exhaust pipe and set the exhaust aside to gain easier access to the protective plate and the gear shift.
4. Take Off the Suspension: Begin by removing the suspension from the rear part of the exhaust pipe, then continue to the middle section. Use some lubricant to help make this process easier.
5. Support the Exhaust Pipe: Once the suspension is removed, lift the exhaust pipe slightly to unhook it. Do not remove it completely; use a jack to support the exhaust pipe during this procedure.
6. Remove the Protective Plate: Use a wrench to unscrew the protective plate underneath the exhaust pipe.
7. Remove the Protective Plate: Take off the protective plate from the vehicle. You can now access the gear shift.
8. Unscrew the Gear Shift: Use a wrench to unscrew the four screws holding the gear shift in place.
9. Move the Gear Shift Aside: Gently move the gear shift aside to get better access, but be careful as it is still connected with cables.
10. Disconnect the Sensor Terminal: Disconnect the terminal that holds the sensor in place.
11. Disconnect the Cables: Remove the two cables still holding the sensor to the vehicle. To do this, set the gear shift to reverse so it pulls on the front cable. You’ll then be able to remove the clamps securing this cable.
12. Flip the Gear Shift: Rotate the gear shift to remove the clamps from the second cable.
13. Remove the Clamps: Use a screwdriver to pry off the clamp securing the upper cable and slide it aside to remove it. Now, you can detach the corresponding cable.
14. Repeat for the Second Cable: Follow the same process for the second cable to remove it as well.
15. Remove the Gear Shift: You have now successfully removed the gear shift from your moped car. Bring out your new gear shift.
16. Reassemble the New Gear Shift: Perform the steps in reverse order to install the new gear shift.
- Begin by reconnecting the cables and clamps that hold them in place. Remember to set the shift to the opposite position (forward or reverse) depending on which cable you're reconnecting.
- Reattach the clamps to the cables with a screwdriver.
- Reconnect the sensor to the gear shift.
- Place the new gear shift back under the vehicle and tighten the four screws securely.
- Reinstall the protective plate and its screws.
17. Reattach the Exhaust Pipe: Finally, reassemble the exhaust pipe by reinstalling the suspension.
Your new gear shift is now installed on your moped car!
