What is a microcar and what are its benefits?

A microcar looks like a small car but is classified as a Class I moped according to Swedish law. These vehicles are allowed to travel at speeds of up to 45 km/h and can weigh a maximum of 425 kg, including a load capacity of up to 260 kg. To drive a microcar, you need an AM license or a higher one, such as a B license, and the driver must be at least 15 years old.

Microcars are exempt from vehicle tax and congestion charges, and they are not subject to mandatory inspection requirements. They are approved for one driver, one passenger, and luggage. To be driven on the road, microcars must be registered and equipped with a triangular warning sign for slow-moving vehicles at the rear.

There are no legal requirements for winter tires during winter, but they are highly recommended for safety. Microcars are not allowed on highways, motorways, or bicycle lanes. They have low fuel consumption, typically around 0.3 liters per 10 kilometers, and their engine power cannot exceed 6 kW (equivalent to 8.2 horsepower).

Benefits of Microcars

Microcars offer space for two people and are a safer alternative to two-wheeled mopeds thanks to their bodywork, which protects from the weather. Many microcars come equipped with features like heaters and air conditioning for a comfortable indoor environment. They also often include functions such as stereo systems, airbags, rear cameras, seat heaters, power windows, ABS brakes, and three-point seatbelts for added safety and comfort.

Since microcars are exempt from vehicle taxes and do not require inspections, operating costs are low. Their fuel consumption of around 0.3 liters per 10 kilometers is comparable to two-wheeled mopeds and significantly lower than that of A-tractors. This makes them an economical option for daily commuting.

In Sweden, there are approximately 17,000 microcars, and their popularity is steadily increasing. They provide young people with the opportunity to independently get to school, sports activities, or meet friends without relying on parents for rides.

Tips for Microcar Owners
