Tools You’ll Need
- Jack and jack stands
- Socket set and screwdrivers
- Mallet or small puller
- Small spring tools or pliers
- Press or wooden block + hammer (for the bearings)
- Protective gloves
Step-by-Step Guide
- Loosen the wheel nuts and lift the vehicle securely. Remove the rear wheel.
- Carefully remove the brake drum – gently tap around the edge if it’s stuck.
- Remove the old brake shoes and springs, noting their original placement.
- Inspect the wheel bearings – if worn, carefully drive them out of the drum.
- Press the new wheel bearings correctly into the drum (using a press, block, and hammer). Ensure they sit flush.
- Install the new brake shoes and springs in the same positions as the originals.
- Reinstall the brake drum, wheel, and tighten the wheel nuts to the correct torque.
- Test the brakes gently and check that they engage evenly.
Important Tips
- Check that the springs and pins are undamaged – replace if necessary.
- The brake drum must rotate freely after assembly – no binding or play.
- If you have a 2017 or newer Aixam, there are two different wheel bearings per brake drum.
